Hi! My name is Stephen McCranie and I make comics!

Comics that Nourish

I’ve been drawing comics since before I knew how to read or write. You might say comics was my first language.

Here’s a comic I drew when I was four or five about a dinosaur who strikes it rich. I drew the pictures and had my mom write the words:

I love comics. Comics can make ideas easy to consume, understand, and share; and ideas can change the world. My goal as an artist is to make comics filled with ideas that help people. This is what “Comics that Nourish” means to me.

Mal and Chad

Mal and Chad is a story about a boy genius and his talking dog. Together they go back in time, up into outer space, and even into people’s dreams.

I created this story to remind kids it’s okay if they don’t know what they want to be when they grow up, because who you are is more important that what you do. Throughout the series, Mal discovers that who he is is someone loved and adored by his best friend and canine companion, Chad.

Space Boy

Space Boy, my current project, is about a girl who belongs in a different time, and a boy possessed by an emptiness as deep as space. It is a sci-fi story about an alien artifact, a mysterious murder, and a love that crosses light years.

I created Space Boy to help people process pain. I wanted to make a story that gives both the comfort of being seen in your suffering, and a hope for better things to come.

I genuinely believe there is hope for us in the darkest places, and even if you can't always find hope, hope can find you.
